ARCHITECTURAL, DESIGN AND PLANNING SCHOOL
UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND, BRISBANE
This project was briefed to be a new architecture design and planning school for the university of Queensland where the design process would investigate the relationship between the interior and exterior of the building and activation of space through considering the needs of staff, students, and the community to offer a safe and pleasant environment to fostering learning.
Through making use of the site incline; stepping the form, creating connections between the ground and first levels, taking advantage of views, the effect of existing vegetation on the overall form and courtyard spaces and through implementing principles of physical and visual permeability and connection between the two sides of the site, a new form was created which uses external connections to express a unique identity to the surrounding UQ buildings.
A place of rest and re-grounding connection amongst a hectic degree
Creating central courtyards shaped by site and significant trees
Experiencing calming and regrounding connection to nature through the created courtyard and experienced through outdoor connecting balconies and atmospheric contribution of environment and material selection.
flood resilient workshop 1:20 detail
Key importance of the workshop revolved around its design to heighten flood resilience.
being of concrete structure allows for the space to be easily cleaned and restart use after floods
The lower level was designed to be primarily for manual labour i.e.. physical modelling, hand cutting and larger workshop projects. no electrical technology equipment are to be used or stored on the lower level.
The upper level is to hold technological equipment such as laser cutters and the computer lab. This organisation of the two spaces allows for electrical equipment to be safe from floods.
